The shadow of the wall makes it very difficult to see.
A loose stone slips and you lose your balance,
teetering on the edge of what you realize must be a deep pit.
If you are lucky, you regain your footing and step back to safety.
You can then walk round the pit and continue.
If you are unlucky, you fall in.
