Cornwall's only Zoo

Newquay Zoo is a zoological garden located within Trenance Leisure Park in Newquay. The zoo was opened on 26th May 1969 by the local council. It was privately owned by Mike Thomas and Roger Martin from 1993 until 2003. In August 2003 Stewart Muir became the new Director and the zoo became part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust. The zoo is part of a registered charity, and was awarded various South West and Cornwall 'Visitor Attraction of The Year' and 'Sustainable Tourism' awards for excellence in 2006, 2007 and 2008.

Newquay Zoo is Cornwall's largest zoo and now covers over 13 acres of land, as well as housing over 130 species. The original zoo was around 6 acres. An expansion of 3.5 acres opened as an African Savanna area from Easter 2009 followed by a central new Philippines area housing endangered fishing cat, Visayan warty pig and Philippine spotted deer. The zoo also has an immersive tropical house exhibit which houses rainforest plants and animals including a sloth, tropical birds, reptiles and insects.

Zoos are for animals...

A breeding programme will save animals from extinction. Can you imagine a world without animals?

Wildlife research will preserve habitats and save animals.

By studying them we will understand how they behave and can help their survival in the wild.

Some animals have nowhere left to live in the wild - we provide a sanctuary for them.

At the animal hospital you will see our work with sick and injured British Wildlife. See the hedgehogs recovering. Ask the nurse about their progress.

and Zoos are for people...

We can learn to appreciate and respect animals and realise how important it is to protect the world in which they live.

We can meet animals at close quarters and gain a better understanding of them - and they of us!

We can enjoy their company 'Its a Wonderful Experience'.

Visit our African plains enclosure and see zebra, antelope, cranes, porcupines and meerkats roaming together. See macaques apes living in family groups.

Nocturnal House. Kinkajous and Rodrigues Bats are active in the twilight world.

Don't miss the Asian otters playing happily in the stream in the oriental garden and the Capybaras wandering the banks of the lake.

See the big cats - lions and pumas.
