Superb early 18th-century mansion

A superb example of an early 18th century house. It was built for Sir William Carew, 5th Baronet in 1720, and ever since has continued as the primary residence of the Carew family. The main block is faced with in silver-grey stone, with red brick wings. The garden contains a national collection of day lilies and magnolias, and an 18th century dovecote. In a Repton landscape, has fine vistas to the Lynher river. Features a formal courtyard, terraces, ornamental Japanese pond and knot garden. Houses national collection of hemerocallis (500 varieties). The house contains a wealth of paintings, tapestries, furniture and embroideries, many linking the great families of Cornwall. The house has been the home of the Carew Pole family for 600 years. Richard Carew wrote his Survey of Cornwall here in 1602. The house and gardens were donated to the National Trust in 1961 by Sir John Carew Pole, on the understanding that the family could continue to reside there. Currently Tremayne Carew Pole lives there with his family.

A very special part of Antony's appeal is the modern sculpture scattered round the garden. From the 'Hypercone', by Simon Thomas and the 'Magnolia Gate', by James Horrobin, to the 'Water Cone', by William Pye, and the 'Dono', by Steven Cox, they really shouldn't be missed.

Film director Tim Burton chose Antony House in 2010 to shoot his film, 'Alice in Wonderland'. He was looking for 'a perfect, pocket-sized mansion; something beautifully symmetrical, with intimate interiors, wide views and landscaped gardens.'
