A world of adventure
Brocklands is a family run adventure park which provides all weather entertainment. Inside there are a range of activities including crazy gold, bouncy castles, slides, bowling and more. Outside there is a 15 inch gauge steam railway, paddle boats, racing cars, pony rides, archery and aerial slide, wildlife walks and more. The restaurant has a wide range of meals from burgers to steaks, salmon and vegetarian options.
Brocklands Adventure Park started life in 1977, as the Pixieland Tea Rooms and Shop. A working resident from that time is Honey, the Welsh mountain pony, who was only two years old then. She still works now, but not for long hours. The children who rode on Honey in the seventies now bring their own children to have a ride.
Gradually more animals were introduced; calves, lambs, piglets, rabbits, guinea pigs, goat kids, chickens, ducks, ornamental pheasants and fish. The site soon became Pixieland Mini Farm and Pets Corner.
Soon more exotic creatures were introduced. These included iguanas, snakes, tropical fish, parrots and a raccoon named Ricky. Georgie, a blue crested Amazon parrot is in the main entrance to greet all the visitors. In 1982 a visitor to the park, Tony Hart offered to make some houses for the little village. These were a great success and are still in the village.
The next big step for owners, Sue and Dennis, came in 1982 with the creation of a large car park and a railway area. A petrol-driven train, consisting of an old engine and two carriages, was purchased, trees were planted and a railway station was built. A pond, in the middle of the site, provided a haven for ducks, frogs and other wildlife. Swings and slides were added and a pony ride track. Later some of the play area was covered in, providing an all weather playground, and the cafe was extended in 1983.
Further expansion in 1987 resulted in a large bouncy castle, trampoline, bumper boats and quad bikes. The name changed again to Pixieland Funpark. A few years later further revamping meant that, from October 1993, Pixieland was the first attraction in North Cornwall to stay open through the winter. A new restaurant seating 200, was opened in March 1997 and a new steam train was purchased for the railway. In 2000, the name changed yet again to Brocklands Adventure Park.
European funding provided a building housing eight computers with information and pictures on local wildlife, pond life and birds. Also in this building, the Clickon Centre, is a display of stuffed birds and animals native to the area. A local wildlife photographer, Ross Hoddinot, took many of the pictures on the computers. A wildlife walk was constructed, with wooden railings and a path to the bottom of the valley, a pond was dug at the bottom and benches were brought in to complete the walk.
Brocklands Adventure Park is a family Fun Park which has continued to grow and now has a four lane, top of the range ten-pin bowling alley adjoining the restaurant. Other additions include an archery centre, crazy golf and a mega tube slide. There are excellent facilities for the whole family and the park is open all year. Set in beautiful North Cornwall, only five miles from Bude, there is ample parking and plenty to see and do.
