History of a town

The Museum established in 1974 is right on Bude's canal-side, close to the beach, and is partly housed in what was once the Canal Company's smithy - you can see the forge incorporated into the museum's displays.

Old photographs, models and an audio-visual presentation tell the story of the Bude Canal and the ships which used it. Bude's maritime heritage is bought alive through a large collection of paintings, photographs and objects salvaged from the many ships which were tragically wrecked along this stretch of coast.

In 2007 the museum was closed and all the contents moved into the Heritage Centre at The Castle.
