Subterranean amazement

Visit Carnglaze for a guided tour through the three caverns of cathedral proportions, created by local slate miners. See the famous subterranean lake with its crystal clear blue-green water. During the tour you will go about 150 yards into the hillside and 60 yards below ground. The caverns were opened to the public in 1973.

A unique display of South West minerals can be seen in the Rum Store chamber. The caverns are at a constant 10°C, so a jumper and sensible footwear are recommended. As well as the craft and mineral shop, there is a refreshment area with vending machines giving hot and cold drinks and snacks. Picnic areas are available in the 6.5 acres of woodland walks.

The first of the caverns, the Rum Store, is so called because it was used by the Royal Navy during the Second World War to store its supply of rum. In 2001 it was converted into an auditorium with seating for 400.
