Remote high moorland lake
Crowdy Reservoir is located on the northern edge of Bodmin Moor two miles from Camelford. It is currently managed, jointly by the South West Lakes Trust and South West Water. There is public access to the reservoir away from the nature reserve. The reservoir supplies water to the North Cornwall water distribution network via treatment at the Lowermoor Water Treatment Works.
The reservoir was constructed in 1973 and covers some 115 acres, it is about 950 feet above sea level. The old war time airfield of Davidstow and its museum is nearby. The high tor of Rough Tor is visible in a southerly direction.
The banks, except around the nature reserve, are open for walking and picnicking and a bird hide, open to all visitors, is a pleasant twenty minute walk from the car park along the north bank. In recognition of the high conservation value of this lake, no activities, apart from free wilderness trout angling, take place at this location.
In winter wildfowl such as Teal and Wigeon are regularly spotted on the water. Starlings gather into a nationally important roost at the nearby Rough Tor with numbers reaching into the several millions in some years.
