Happy Donkeys

Flicka is a registered charity, founded by Mary Berryman in 1995 following the rescue and care of an elderly pony named Mickey and a neglected strawberry-roan pony named 'Flicka'.

Flicka was found abandoned in the middle of an industrial estate - a small pony amongst high-rise buildings and billowing smoke. Mary loved all animals with a passion and couldn't bear to see or hear of anything suffering - so Mary Berryman's Flicka was born.

Mary's Daughter, Judy and Laurie now continue with the Flicka legacy as Directors. Our sanctuary provides a safe home for over 100 donkeys and horses, all of which have been rescued from situations of neglect, abuse and abandonment, We have rescued and rehabilitated well over 600 animals since we began our work over 20 years ago.

Our rescued donkeys and horses live in various groups according to their needs - you will find them happily going about their business in the barns and paddocks. Just follow the signs and pathways to find them! From April/May onwards most of them live out, except our elderly residents and those that require a little extra TLC, who still come in at night. Around November time, they all come into the barns to spend their days in a warm and cosy environment, but still have outdoor access in case they fancy wandering outside for some fresh air!

Each and every one of our animals has been rescued from abuse, neglect and abandonment. Some have suffered unthinkable cruelty, Flicka is their retirement, their sanctuary and their safe home for life. Please respect this and understand that whilst lots of them just love to come over to people for a fuss, some are slightly more nervous and might prefer to hang back and watch you from a distance.
