Superb subtropical garden
Set in wooded valley dropping steeply to the hamlet of Durgan on the shore of the beautiful Helford estuary, Glendurgan is one of the great sub-tropical gardens of the South West. It contains many fine mature trees and shrubs, including rhododendrons, camellias, a vast 150-year-old liriodendron and a large michelia. An attractive pond graces the lower valley, together with tree ferns, gunneras, hydrangeas and bamboos. Exotic trees and shrubs flourish amidst open glades carpeted with wild flowers. When Alfred and Sarah Fox began Glendurgan in 1820 they had the entertainment of their twelve children in mind. The famous laurel maze of 1833 and the Giant's Stride are especially popular even with modern children. In 1962 the Garden was given to the National Trust by Cuthbert and Philip Fox. There is a tea-room, shop and plant sales at reception.
On the north bank of the Helford River just south of the village of Mawnan Smith.
