Amazing hole in the ground
One of John Wesley's favourite places for preaching in Cornwall, receiving 18 visits between 1762 and 1789. The natural amphitheatre was created by underground mine workings and was capable of holding a congregation of many thousands.
After Wesley's death the Pit continued to be used for religious gatherings and the tradition continues to this day - in particular the annual gathering on Whitsun, but also with services all through the summer months. The 12 circular terraces that form the seats were cut by local miners between 1803 and 1806.
Now owned by the Methodist Church and managed by a Committee appointed by the Cornwall Methodist District Synod. Since 1807 it has been used for the annual Whit Monday/Spring Bank Holiday Methodist Rally. As well as worship, as on summer Sunday afternoons, the Pit is used for musical events, drama, weddings - and sponsored walks. Alongside is a Visitor Centre opened in 1991 and the little Busveal Chapel opened in 1836.
