Garden from another world

Garden

Nestling in the bottom of the lush Vale of Lanherne, one and a half miles from the North coast of Cornwall, the Japanese Garden in St. Mawgan is an oasis of tranquillity. Set in approximately one acre the myriad paths lead you to discover the many traditional Japanese features enclosed therein. The creation of the Water Gardens, Stroll Gardens and Zen Garden in accordance with the philosophy of the East and authentic Japanese gardening styles offers both a physical and a spiritual experience. Standing on the Cha-Seki (Tea-House) balcony watching the fish glide through the water listening to the waterfall tumbling into the pond, sitting in the Zen viewing house silently contemplating the rock-scape, or simply strolling along soaking up the sights and smells of the spectacular Japanese maples and beautiful azaleas, rhododendrons and much more a journey round this garden will be an experience to remember.

The development of the Japanese Garden first began in 1991, however the location was chosen in 1985, when Robert & Stella Hore moved on to the site. One year later their daughter (Natalie) was born & on 1st May 1988 the Bonsai Nursery was opened to the public. The Japanese Garden took 6 years to create before Robert felt it was ready for people to see. The place itself already had an energy & magical feel to it even before it was developed & it was of paramount importance that this special feeling was not destroyed during creation. Opening on 1st May 1997 the Japanese Garden has continued to grow since then & Robert & Stella, now retired, have handed over management of the garden to their daughter Natalie & her partner Stuart.
