We invite you to explore the Granite Kingdom of cliffs and carns, mines and moors, antiquities and intrigue around Pendeen. This rugged granite landscape has hardly changed for thousands of years.
Pendeen itself grew with the surrounding tin and copper mines at their peak in the 1800's. The village is built over a honeycombe of mine workings. Many locals worked at the legendary Levant Mine, which came to a tragic end when the 'Man Engine' a lift to take miners up and down the mine shaft, broke in 1919.
Re-working of the old North Levant led to the birth of a new mine, Geevor, which was one of the last working mines in Cornwall (it finally closed in 1990).
The lighthouse (Pendeen Watch) flashed its first warning on 26th September 1900 after a spate of wrecks on the nearby cliffs.
South of Pendeen, the cliff path will take you past Botallack Mine to the ancient cliff castle called Kenidjack Castle. Off the Pendeen lighthouse road, you will find Pendeen manor, a 17th century listed (Grade 1) building. Behind the Manor you will find Pendeen Vau, a magnificent fogou.
Higher Boscaswell Holy Well can be found before the conifer plantation, near North Road (B3318), and close to the west is Carn Kenidjack, capped by a large granite outcrop resembling a battleship.
The large flat expanse of moor on the far side of North Road is Woon Gumpas. Above it, to the east, you will see Chun Quoit, a Neolithic Dolman. Beyond the quoit is Chun Castle, an Iron Age hill fort, built on the 'Tinners Way' (an ancient trade route between the mines and the ports of St. Ives and Mounts Bay), to the south, on the slopes below the Aircraft Beacon, is the Boswens Stone, a Bronze Age Menhir.
