Tiny medieval cottage

Legend backed by a fair amount of fact, is that this was the childhood home of Mary Newman, first wife of Sir Francis Drake, and Mayoress of Plymouth during Elizabethan times, she died in 1581.

The existing cottage, recently restored by the Tamar Protection Society, was built around 1480 and is a rare survival of a small medieval house, retaining its original atmosphere. It has a central passage and pole staircase to the rooms above. Contemporary furniture has been provided by the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Cornish Building Group Award - 1984.

The garden is laid out in authentic Elizabethan style, showcasing the plants and herbs which were vital to a household of the period. Light refreshment may be taken in the garden whilst relaxing and enjoying the view of the Tamar river below.
