Much more than just a garden
Probus is a garden with a difference... a place of beauty and surprises... a place of discovery where you can enjoy thousands of specimen plants and shrubs and find new ways to get even more out of your garden.
One of only five such centres of excellence in the entire UK, Probus Gardens has featured regularly on television programmes such as "Gardeners' World". Unlike most traditional gardens, however, Probus offers a whole series of different cameos, landscapes and designs which can be reproduced in a typical plot.
You'll find the exotic: wind-tender gardens... desert gardens... herb and alpine collections as well as plants from Mediterranean lands. Close by, there are luxuriant herbaceous borders which give way to displays of fruit and dwarf conifers.
For those seeking knowledge there are demonstration gardens with practical tips on successful techniques... experimental grounds and trial beds that reveal what really will grow best in your garden. For younger visitors there is the challenge of the Probus Trail.
Small wonder a recent visitor said: "It's like a walk through the pages of a gardening encyclopaedia."
Peter Blake, County Adviser for Horticultural Education, designed the garden. The Right Honorable Lord Aberconway, President of the Royal Horticultural Society and Head of ECLP of St. Austell, opened the gardens officially on 18th May 1972. During the next 18 years Peter and his team including the Garden Superintendent, Eric Trevan (until he retired in 1984), created the County Demonstration Garden: an educational resource which acquired national and international acclaim, attracting about 28,000 visitors and hosting 34 school visits at its peak in 1989 before Peter retired in 1990. The gardens closed when the lease terminated at the end of September 2004.
