Wild gardening
Come and recharge your batteries you can run, walk or just sit and enjoy the tranquillity and peacefulness. We hope you will enjoy our wild garden (wilden), we have tried to keep the garden natural with sympathetic planting of native trees and plants mixed with some exotics. Tanglewood is probably not for those that appreciate the more formal, manicured style of garden.
We bought Tanglewood (named after the mass of brambles etc that greeted us on our first visit) in October 2001. We started work on the first pond (round pond) in June 2002 and planted our first 200 trees, willow and poplar. The second pond (bridge pond) commenced in 2003 with a further 200 mixed alder trees. The third pond (kingfisher pond) was finished in 2004 with each successive year numerous trees, shrubs and plants have been planted too many to count or remember. Our fourth pond (Golden pond) was finished in 2013, and we are waiting for the planting to mature. The chainsaw carvings dotted around the ponds are all carved from wind-felled trees from the wood by Tony (the owner).
The pond area has attracted many birds including Mallards, Canadian geese, Moorhens, Coots, Kingfisher, Heron, and Swallows and Martins who enjoy swooping across the ponds for a drink. Plus the water life insects and amphibians, Dragonflies, Damselflies, Frogs, Toads, Newts, Lizards.
Whereas within the woodland area Jays, Buzzards, Rooks, Snipe, Woodpecker and Owls have been observed including all the usual wild birds. There is evidence of badger sets, rabbits have been seen and sadly we have found evidence of foxes leaving feathers after a meal of duck.
We looked on the wood as a ten-year project, but it seems to have taken over our lives. We hope it continues for many more years.
We have no catering facilities as we do not wish to over commercialise Tanglewood, but you are very welcome to bring your own picnics. We also do not have litter bins and expect anything you bring will be taken away. We do have a compost toilet on site.
About three miles west of Penzance, south of Newbridge on the A3071.
