Small hamlet in a deep sided cove with large beach at low tide

Map

Trebarwith strand is approximately 2 miles south of Tintagel and can be reached on foot along the coastal footpath by St. Materiana's church at Tintagel or via Treknow or Trewarmett.

At low tide the beach at Trebarwith Strand is almost a mile long stretch of unbroken golden sand. The beach is at the bottom of a deep valley with many attractive views along the Heritage Coastline. Rocks must be negotiated before you reach the rocky sands of the beach.

The surfing at Trebarwith can be awesome and the swimmers and rock poolers are well catered for. The beach is interspersed with large slabs of slate and was once used as a small port for the nearby Delabole Slate Quarry.

Rugged Gull Rock, about 600 yards offshore greatly enhances the picturesque setting of the beach, which as a result is frequently used as a filming location.

Trebarwith was the scene of the shipwreck of the 'Sarah Anderson' in 1886 (all on board perished), but the most famous of the wrecks happened on December 20th, 1893 at Lye Rock when the barque 'Iota' was driven against the cliff and all but one were saved.
