Working fish

The Pilchard Works in Newlyn is the last working salt pilchard factory in the country. This final reminder of the once great Cornish fishing industry, is still salting, pressing and packing nearly 100 tonnes of pilchards in wooden boxes each year. The Pilchard Works They still export to the same Italian family that started buying from Cornwall in 1905 and 90 years later, after adapting and restoring the granite buildings, opened their doors to visitors for the first time. This unique 'working museum' has managed to combine the fascinating social, industrial and artistic heritage of the fishing industry in a way that appeals to all age groups. It won a National Award for 'outstanding presentation of Britain's Heritage' and was honoured to receive a visit from HRH Prince Charles in 1995.
