Welcome to one and all

Welcome to Cornwall - the Cornwall of autumn mists, winter gales and spring flowers, of un-crowded beaches and hidden coves, wooded river valleys, purple moorland and gaunt granite headlands, 327 miles of coastal enchantment and solitude uncoiling into the Atlantic, the longest in the country.

Welcome also to the Cornwall of the late Derek Tangye, whose chronicles of Minack, the flower farm away from it all on the Cornish coast, have become a legend in our time.

Derek and his wife, Jeannie, gave up hectic successful lives in London for solitude and space of a cottage on a cliff. Minack became a passion. They were determined that they would keep it undisturbed, not just for those who might seek it out, but as a special place in the imagination of many others.

As Derek reflects in A Gull on the Roof...

We had been playing the game of looking for somewhere to settle whenever we had taken our holidays in Cornwall. We wanted a cottage with a wood nearby and fields that went down to the sea, distant from any other habitation and remote from a countrified imitation of the life we were wishing to leave. Somewhere where we could earn a living and yet relish the isolation of a South Sea island, be able to think without being told what to think, have the leisure to study the past and live the present without interference.

Derek Tangye lived on his own in the beautiful world of Minack since his wife Jeannie died. Sadly he himself died recently. His books remain a glorious celebration of a way of life Inspired by Cornwall.
