A taste of Cornish art

The Tate Gallery in St. Ives presents changing displays of twentieth century art in the context of Cornwall, focusing on the modern tradition with which St. Ives is associated. It opened in June 1993 and offers a unique introduction to modern art, where many works can be viewed in the surroundings that inspired them.

As a building itself the Tate is of great architectural importance. Situated on the site of a former gas works the gallery stands spectacularly beside the cliff overlooking Porthmeor beach.

Displays are drawn from the Tate Gallery's collections of British and modern art. Study Displays are based on individual artists or themes. They frequently focus on rarely shown works and archive material lent by public and private collections.

Artists such as Ben Nicholson, Christopher Wood, Alfred Wallis, Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron and Terry Frost are all represented in the new gallery, as well as Dame Barbara Hepworth's sculpture and Bernard Leach's ceramics.

Artists' projects range from invitations to artists to make or present new work in the gallery, to educational or community based work. They give artists the opportunity to engage with the Gallery's many visitors. An average of 240,000 visitors per year visit the gallery.

Administered jointly with the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden.

In October 2017 a £20 million expansion project to double the size of the gallery is completed.
