Sub-tropical spring garden

Trewidden is set in south facing hills, two miles west of Penzance. Until 2002 this wonderful sub-tropical spring garden, created by the Bolitho family, mainly Thomas Bedford Bolitho (1835–1915), and was only rarely open to the public; now, after recent restoration after storm damage and pruning of over-mature camellias, it is essential visiting for serious gardeners. It covers twelve acres, including the separate South Garden, and consists mostly of informal woodland paths, some leading to an attractive pond with a Japanese lantern and a whale-tail sculpture. Although chiefly renowned for its camellias, of which there are over 300 varieties from India, China and other parts of the Far East, equally fine are the early-flowering magnolias, which shine forth above the other shrubs throughout. There is also a magnificent stand of tree ferns set in the remains of an early open-cast tin mine. The south-facing walled garden is under restoration, with an emphasis on summer-flowering plants and artefacts from the tin industry.

Following the death of her husband, Bolitho's daughter, Mary Williams, returned to Trewidden in 1955 and took over the garden. Alverne Bolitho (b. 1961), a cousin of Mary Williams, inherited the property when she died and has developed it into a popular tourist attraction.
